CineEurope’s Executive Roundtable

While the Hollywood strikes had a lingering impact in the first half of the year, 2024 was marked by some record numbers. Disney’s Inside Out 2 became the highest-grossing animated film of all time and fastest to surpass the $1-billion benchmark globally – in just 19 days. The market was also fueled by local hits and the share for French-made films reached 44.4%, one of its highest levels ever. Italy saw the best summer of its box office history.

And in December 2024, the International and US markets recorded the third-highest grossing month since December 2019, generating a combined box office of $2.67 billion in the month, thanks to a strong and diverse slate on offer. At the same time, cinemas have continued to invest in the Big Screen Experience by upgrading their existing sites and opening new ones.

These two ingredients—a great slate and a great experience—are the key to cinematic success. In this high-level Executive Roundtable, leading figures from International and European exhibition and distribution will share insights on their markets and what they feel is needed to ensure continued success for the sector. What do audiences want to watch and how? How do we improve the slate, the experience?

The Enemy Isn’t AI or Streaming — It’s Holding On To Attention

As audience behaviour shifts and new technologies transform not only production but consumption, cinema’s greatest challenge isn’t actually AI or streaming — it’s staying relevant in an economy of infinite choice and fractured attention. In this opening keynote, we explore why theatrical must evolve beyond legacy assumptions of primacy and double down on its role as a launchpad for global IP, cultural resonance and long-term monetisation. Theatrical storytelling remains one of the few truly unifying cultural experiences — and this session examines how cinema can continue to create moments that matter, building emotional connection and commercial value in a fragmented landscape. It offers a clear-eyed perspective on how theatrical can reclaim its place at the centre of culture by adapting to what audiences need now, not what worked before.
